Oh my goodness! What is happening! Something very exciting!

The greatest zine on earth, packed with morbid loveliness, educational and entertaining: ELECTRIC ANT #2 has just been released!

Edited by the relentlessly awesome Ryan Sands of SAME HAT, this book is filled with articles, comics, and illustrations.

I've contributed two things to this issue:

1. A page in the extremely bizarro BODY HORROR comic jam, alongside the following excruciatingly talented folks: Jon Vermilyea, Michael DeForge, Jason Thompson, Saicoink, Rob Syrett, Makkinoso, Calvin Wong, Ryan Germick, Jenn Yin, Lisa Hanawalt, Dash Shaw, Derek Yu, Evan Hayden, Shawn Cheng, Kaz Strzepek, and Derek Ballard. This comic is VERY UNUSUAL and VERY HILARIOUS.

2. An illustration of my favorite BLOODY MOMENT from "a beloved piece of cultural detritus." I chose Terry Gilliam's Brazil, here is a sneak peek:

I don't have a full list of others who worked on this feature, but I know Angie Wang (Final Fantasy VII), Mickey Zacchilli (Titus), and Harvey James (Akira) are in there, along with tons of people who also contributed to the comic.

If you could possibly need any more incentive to BUY THIS THING, here is a handy dandy google books preview:

Um, behold that cover! It's by the incredible Hellen Jo!

Yes, so, Electric Ant #2 nothing but wonderful, and it's only $12 (sans shipping). If you're at the Alternative Press Expo this weekend, you can get it yo' self at the Bang Gang table.

SO BASICALLY:

EXCITING NEWS [
September 3rd, 2009 @ 9:30pm
]

I am no longer that weird loser who wears braces in college.

My mouth feels so slippery

For dinner my mum and I decided to celebrate with sushi and sake. But the waiter misunderstood our sake order, and gave us a fat pitcher of hot stuff rather than just the single cup that we'd wanted to share. I have many profound phobias, but here are two of them: 1) inconveniencing waitstaff, and 2) wasting good food + drink. So I prevented my mum from sending it back, and to ensure her sobriety while driving it was necessary for me to drink the whole thing.

After dinner, I wandered outside while my mum went to the bathroom. I sat down at a vacant outside table at C'est la Vie (since they close after lunch) and I was confusedly looking at some pamphlets when a French lady came up and started speaking French at me. She was asking about the cafe. I answered her in English (I guess effectively confirming her unusual and seemingly unmerited suspicion that I at least understood French) and she continued asking questions in French, so eventually I caved and explained in extremely sloppy drunken French that C'est la Vie est ouvert seulement au matin et dans l'après-midi, désoléeeee.

I've run into a French tourist or two every time I've been out since I arrived. Someone should tell them that Sarasota is actually really not the best place to vacation in the states. Especially in the summer. No, really. Why is this happening?

I've been watching a lot of Iron Chef recently.

I've been drawing, mostly pen + ink, so it'll have to wait for a scanner.

Oh yeah, hi.

I'm in Sarasota for a week or so. So far I've watched Inglourious Basterds with TJ (quite quite good) and Monster Thursday with Ross (quite quite Norwegian). Call me if you want to hang out and watch some movies that are quite quite of a certain persuasion.

Something RATHER EXCITING is happening to me next week, and you will soon know what it is!

Here is some crap that has been mounting. I've been letting so much stuff build that I can't keep track of where everything is on my hard drive, + there's oodles of stuff I can't scan til I get to Providence, and that's just the way it is.

A lot of these -- most of the digital ones -- have been the result of a series of experiments in which Jacob tells me that I suck in an ineffable, inexplicable way. I guess if I had any sense I would stop painting digitally, because I'm rather shit at it!-- and go back to pen and ink and watercolor and printmaking and all that stuff that's superior in many, many ways.

But I have some compulsion to press on, and Jacob and Gwendolyn have been giving me variegated comments and maybe you will see evidence of a movement in some direction.

maybe you too can give me good advice. )

This fucking around, as generic as it may have turned out, has left me feeling lost and confused, so if there's something that jumps out to you as more or less valid than the rest, let me know, I do appreciate it.

+ if anyone else wants to give me helpful assignments, I can put out about three of these in a day, and I am on vacation for just a little bit longer, so I promise that if you suggest something, I'll do it. Though please don't JUST ask me to draw X or Y character fapping on the moon, give me some other limitation like color scheme / light situation / angle / composition / painting style / etc. I want to break out of my comfort zone a bit more. No scanner here though, so it will be digital.

Hope everyone is well!

On the weekend of July 19th, Ben and I went to the Big Sur area sort of a few hours south of San Francisco. It was very lovely. I have photos! I took rather a ton of photos so I'll split them into two posts.

HEY GUYS, KJ and I have a joint blog! So named after our mutual love of Shakespeare, explosive devices, and fucking ourselves over.

The blog's content will be a combination of comics / cartooning / printmaking as well as news articles related to those things.

It's been running slow for a month, but now that I have less going on, it should pick up speed!

It was a silly coincidence that I blogged about wanting to try out the Pentel pocket brush pen, and then got to borrow Angie's not four hours after posting :B

I also posted a sketchbook dump there, but I have replicated it here for your dubious convenience. )

Before the summer is out I will hopefully streamline my blogging presence so that all of my art is posted to an art blog with a professional appearance. Art related to comics / cartooning / printmaking will also go to Petarded.

I will retain this journal for more casual/personal posting. I've got to redo my website before I get all this off the ground, and there's another exciting thing on the horizon, but it'll all get done eventually (I hope!).

COOOOON

I am so behind on posting photos and art - I'm still not done with the batch from Portland, and Ben and I took a vacation to Big Sur the weekend after that. But for now, priorities!

So from July 22nd to 25th I went to San Diego to attend Comic-Con! I went there thanks to the generosity of Tommy Roddy, writer of Pride High, who got me a four-day pass. Working with him was a reward enough in itself, so I was overjoyed to go to Comic-Con as well :3

I roomed with [info]metronome, [info]errorism, [info]soloproject, [info]icthyopook, [info]monstersexual, [info]angrybiscuits, [info]egometry, and also Nikki and Brandon? Brendan? I wasn't there when this confusion was resolved

We all lucked out because we got along swell!

My report on the con is not really comprehensive because I basically wandered around doing whatever I felt like. I didn't stick too much to my schedule -- which is good, 'cause if I had, I'd be in lines 80% of the time.

I'm mostly going to talk about the things I photographed, since I have a poor memory otherwise.

thursday - lines, bongo panel with sammy harhkam!!!, lisa hanawalt!!! at the buenaventura booth, more lines, terry gilliam!!! + dr. parnassus, yet more lines, some random cosplayers )

friday - videogames, angie wang!!!, olivia munn is hot, rifftrax, worst cartoons ever )

saturday - don't remember what I did, except venture brothers )

sunday - we went home )

Not pictured: Ye Olde Spaghetti Factory, pad thai, riding one of those goofy pedicab things, chillin' with dudes in the hotel room, Ben winning ALL THE MAGICS

Total loot:

Lisa Hanawalt - Stay Away From Other People
Naoki Urasawa - Monster #2 (I got this from the Comic Relief booth. They had volumes 1-2, and then volumes 12-18. I went to Viz to get more. They had one copy, and it was volume #17. I was morose.)
Eddie Campbell - The Black Diamond Detective Agency
Sammy Harkham - Crickets #1 + #2
Becky Dreistadt + Frank Gibson - Tiny Kitten Teeth (at Angie's excellent rec!)
Tom Gauld - The Gigantic Robot
Lewis Carroll - Alice's Adventures Underground (reproduction of original handwritten manuscript with Carroll's original illustrations, from Buenaventura. The transcriptions are in French, inexplicably. I own so many copies of this but none with the Carroll illustrations, it seemed like I'd have to gut myself if I didn't own it)
Nate Powell - Swallow Me Whole
Shadow of the Colossus figurine (from one of those mystery boxes where you get one of six potentials or so. I now have a #5 to go with my #16 :3)

I had a fun time.

my comic-con schedule )

You will notice that most of these things overlap.

Fortunately (?) I don't want to go to most of these things.

edit: Updated with rooms and bolded preferences! And wow, the major big deal movie sneak peeks completely edge out all of the LGBT panels. And there's awkward 15 minute overlaps everywhere. We shall see how this works out. I predict lots of walking in and out halfway through presentations.

People who have been before: how long before an event starts should you get in line?

People who live in the Bay area and are going: wanna carpool? We have three spots :B

People who will be there: I hope to see you around.
